Learn to Build a Website in One Day (and you don’t have to learn to code!)

Brought to you by AAF-Jacksonville + AIGA Jacksonville

I know — most designers have sat through at least one web design training course in the past ten years. But we promise that this one is different. Muse (codename) is a brand new software application from Adobe. Muse uses a similar approach to design as tools such as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator to enable graphic designers to plan, design and publish HTML websites without being restricted to templates, and without needing to learn to write code. In just one day, you’ll learn how to use this deep set of design and layout features to deliver professional, highly designed websites based on the latest standards.

Day: Friday, March 23
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Place: Keiser University Auditorium (at the Summit at Southpoint) directions
Tickets: Please register below.

What You Will Learn

Plan your site

Quickly create a sitemap for your web design easily adding and rearranging pages and their relationship to each other.

Apply master pages so that you can quickly apply elements that are common across multiple pages.

Define site properties like margins, page width, page alignment and hyperlink state colors.

Design your site

Layout your website design using tools very similar to those found in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator including common shortcuts and features like multi-file place, smart guides, paste in place, the eyedropper tool, the hand and zoom tool, page columns and gutters and more.

Dynamic layout resizing allows your webpage to get longer to accommodate the content on each page.

Place and style images and graphics including .PNG, .PSD, .GIF and .SWF and enjoy precise control over color, fill, opacity, stroke, rounded corners, gradients and effects. Placed images and graphics will be optimized automatically when the website is previewed or published.

Enjoy round-tripping editing with Photoshop and copy or paste image data directly from Photoshop or Fireworks.

Embed HTML code snippets from sources like Google Maps, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Add, edit and format text, even create and save text styles like in InDesign.

Choose between web safe and display fonts. Display fonts will be rasterized on deployment with the text included in the ALT tag for the graphic so search engines can still “read” the content

Add and completely customize smart site navigation that automatically reflects your site map layout.

Easily add fully customizable interactive slideshows, tabbed and accordion panels, lightboxes and more.

Enable Tooltips and remote rollovers.

Apply up, over, down and normal states for Photoshop buttons and menu items.

An Assets Panel helps you keep track of all assets associated with your site including the ability to re-link or Edit Original, much in the same way the Links Panel works in InDesign.

Preview your design in Muse, or in your browser.

Publish your site

Create a trial site for testing and review purposes. This trial site will be hosted with Adobe and you’ll be able to send the URL to clients and business partners for review purposes.

You can convert your trial site to a live site by keeping it hosted with Adobe.

Or export your site for ftp to other hosting providers.

Best suited to designers:

Who have never designed a website

Who have design designed websites but rely on someone else to build them

Who are comfortable building a HTML website but would prefer not to have to code

Who rely on template driven systems to build websites without writing code

A “How To” speaker event with Carl Smith & Al Emerick

Your design skills in your sketchbook, keyboard or any other tool you use can only take you so far. There will be a time where you have to present the thinking behind those ideas. Or maybe you just need a little refresher on the best practices of what to say and when to say it. We can’t hide behind an Account Executive or business executive forever. As a creative we need to be able to explain the strategy and thoughts that shape our designs. Yep, you have to become a salesman.

What makes the client tick? What can you say to make sure they leave the meeting confident that your designs solve the problem they came to you to fix? At this AIGA Jacksonville event, professionals from both the client side and the creative side are going to give you the pointers needed to evoke trust and confidence when pitching your next design.

Thursday, March 1
6:30 pm – Check In & Networking
Bid on everything from graphic design to television time — all at a fraction of the market value. Attract more business and spend less doing it — that means more profit for you!

In just one evening, you could literally save thousands of dollars, all while enjoying endless refreshments and entertainment with a true auctioneer!

Below are a few FAQs and their answers. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact our Media Auction Chair, Gayle Hart.

BONUS: AAF-Jax members will receive 10 minutes of extra bidding time at the end of the silent auction.

Day: Wednesday, March 7, 2012
Silent Auction: 5:30 – 8:00p
Registration (Live Auction): 5:30p
Live Auction: 6:30 – 8:30p
Place: Florida Theatre
Admission: Silent Auction – FREE; Live Auction – $10 (includes complimentary beer and wine during auction)

What goes on at the Media Auction?

If you’ve never been to our Media Auction, here’s what you’ve been missing.

There are two simultaneous auctions: one live and one silent. The live auction is where you’ll find advertising, media and the like. If you’ve ever wanted to try a new form of advertising (or want to get a ridiculous deal on something), this is for you. And it’s not just for media buyers — it’s for anyone and everyone who owns, helps run or has buying power for a business, non-profit or special event.

The silent auction is pure entertainment. Open to the general public, it includes anything that would appeal to the masses — bottles of wine, dinners for two, jewelry, tickets to shows and sports events, cruises, spa packages and more.

For either auction, anyone can bid and anyone can win.

Why are you having it?

Our annual Media Auction serves multiple purposes. Proceeds from the event help fund our scholarship program for local advertising and graphic design students, as well as support our industry initiatives throughout the year (such as educational programs and annual events). It gives businesses — big and small — an opportunity to try media and services they might not have previously considered. And the event serves as advertising for companies who donate, since it is held in the beautiful Florida Theatre during one of downtown’s busiest events of the month: Art Walk.

Why — and what — should I donate?

There are lots of reasons, and pretty much anything can be donated. Besides making you feel good for donating (and who wouldn’t?), it gets your company in front of numerous potential customers and new businesses.

Donations can be of any value, from $1 to … well, there’s really no limit. There are two auctions you can be a part of: the live auction (with media-related items and items valued at $1,000 or greater) and the silent auction (with non media-related and otherwise “fun” items, valued below $1,000). Even if your company has nothing to do with providing advertising or media, everyone can benefit from advertising their business — which is essentially what you’ll be doing. Any good or service you feel represents your business would be a perfect item. And if you’re feeling generous, we’ll always appreciate more than one!

Does it cost anything to be a bidder?

The silent auction is free and open to everyone. Entry to the live auction is $10 per person and includes beer and wine, as well as a $10 credit toward your first live auction winning bid (bidders with a winning purchase during the live auction will have their entry fee of $10 applied as a credit toward the first item; limit one credit per winning bidder).

Okay, so I’m interested … but who else should go?

Let’s be honest, bidding is a whole lot more fun with a group. So even if you’re the one holding the purse strings, not much rivals the excitement of a friendly bidding war between groups, orchestrated by a live (and comedic) auctioneer! So bring your coworkers. Bring your friends. Bring your clients (heck, they suddenly may express interest in something new). And if they catch the bidding bug, they can venture over to the silent auction to try their hand at it.

So really the question becomes: Why wouldn’t you come?

What items are available for bid?

The following items will be part of this year’s auction. But check back often; we’re adding new items every day!

For more than 40 years, Bowl for Kids’ Sake has supported Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies throughout the country, serving as their premier fundraising “Thank You” party. After months of raising awareness and funds, our local agencies thank their volunteers with a Bowl for Kids’ Sake party at their local bowling center. This year, Bowl for Kids’ Sake will be held at Latitude 30, the premier bowling alley of Jacksonville. This year also is the first ever Midnight Bowl, intended to draw a younger crowd to participate. Midnight Bowl will help raise money to ensure the continuation of supportive adult mentoring into the lives of every child in Northeast Florida who would benefit from having a Big Brother or Big Sister. AAF-Jacksonville and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida are partnering up to make this possible.

The Challenge

Design a poster to make an impact. AAF-Jacksonville and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida have teamed up this year to promote their Bowl For Kids’ Sake: Midnight Bowl, a fundraiser for the continued mentoring of children within the Jacksonville community. This year Bowl for Kids’ Sake will be held at Latitude 30 and will also offer its first ever Midnight Bowl to draw a younger crowd to participate. To aid in Big Brothers Big Sisters’ efforts in making it a successful event, AAF-Jacksonville is lending a hand, and calling all designers — novice to pro — to design their Midnight Bowl poster for 2012.

Eligibility

Everyone is encouraged to participate! All we ask is that each composition be original. They can’t infringe the publicity or privacy rights of any individual, living or deceased, or otherwise impinge upon any person’s personal or proprietary rights. By participating in this contest, you agree to abide and be bound by the contest rules and decisions of AAF-Jacksonville and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida, which are final in all matters relating to the contest.

Guidelines & Materials

Poster size must be 11″ wide by 17″ high. The design must incorporate the Big Brothers Big Sisters and Bowl For Kids’ Sake logos, which can be downloaded here. You will also need to download and submit a disclaimer for your work.

Submission

Files must be entered in PDF format and sent to Eric Baskauskas at ericb@cfmedia.net, along with the signed disclaimer before 12pm on February 15, 2012 to be entered.
